DHA is a colourless 3-carbon sugar that when applied to the skin causes a chemical reaction with amino acids in the surface cells of the skin producing a darkening effect, so anything that is on the skin, like tattoos will also react with the agent.

DHA does not damage skin as it only affects the outermost cells of the epidermis, temporarily darkening the skin to simulate a tan that typically wears off after a few days.

So just like going in direct sunlight, your skin will tan the same just with added ink in there - and the tanning application will only dull the colour of tattoos slightly.
